Unit History

The 202d MI Battalion was activated at Fort Monmouth, N.J., on October 2, 1982, as a subordinate element of the 513th MI Brigade and on June 1, 1994, the battalion moved to its current home at Fort Gordon, Georgia. In addition to three companies located at Fort Gordon, the battalion also has one company forward in Kuwait and small detachments based in locations throughout Southwest Asia.

Since its activation in 1982, the 202d MI Battalion has developed into an echelon-above-corps battalion capable of rapid deployment into a bare base, hostile environment to provide theater level sustained counterintelligence and interrogation support for U.S. ARCENT and USCENTCOM Forces. Our focus is on Southwest Asia, a challenging and complex area of the world with distinguished service in operations Desert Shield/Storm, operation Restore Hope, operations Iraqi freedom/new dawn and operation enduring freedom.

Since 1990, the battalion has maintained a deployed presence throughout Southwest Asia for enduring intelligence operations, theater engagements and exercise support. The battalion has deployed to participate in major combat operations on four separate occasions – to Afghanistan twice and Iraq twice - for a total of 42 months. In addition, the battalion has formed and deployed smaller specialized collection detachments to Djibouti (2002), Iraq (2003-2004) and Afghanistan (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010), while sustaining a forward presence in the region through its Field Office Southwest Asia (FOSWA), located in Kuwait and Qatar. Today, the Soldiers and civilians of the DEUCE are recognized across the Department of Defense as the Army’s most experienced counterintelligence (CI) and human intelligence (HUMINT) unit.

The battalion's honors include:  The Defense of Saudi Arabia Battle Streamer, the Liberation of Kuwait Battle Streamer, the Iraq/Kuwait Ceasefire Streamer, three Meritorious Unit Citations, two army superior unit awards, and the National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation for 1991, 1992, and 1993.

The battalion today is the culmination of many outstanding leaders, years of experience, and the dedication and efforts of thousands of soldiers and civilians. “DEUCE".
