The 297th Military Intelligence Battalion provides tailored, multi-disciplined Intelligence teams and capabilities in support of USCENTCOM, USARCENT, and regionally aligned and globally responsive forces, to defeat adversaries, promote regional stability, support partners nations and allies, and protect US interests.
297th Military Intelligence Battalion History
The 297th Military Intelligence Battalion was originally constituted in the United States Army Reserves as the 297th Army Security Agency Company on 21 November 1962 and assigned to the Third United States Army. It was activated on 1 March 1963 at Atlanta, Georgia. The unit was reorganized and redesignated as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 297th Army Security Agency Battalion on 15 April 1966. It was inactivated on 31 January 1968 and relieved from assignment to the Third United States Army.
On 1 February 1990 the unit was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 297th Military Intelligence Battalion, and concurrently removed from the Army Reserves and allotted to the regular Army. The unit was redesignated as Headquarters, Headquarters and Service Company, 297th Military Intelligence Battalion, on 1 February 1990, and was activated at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. During June and July 1994, the elements at Fort Monmouth moved to Fort Gordon, Georgia.
The 297th Military Intelligence Battalion deployed elements to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Storm from 1990 to1991. The unit later supported United States Marine Corps forces in Somalia for Operation Restore Hope from December 1992 to May 1993, as well as NATO Operations in Bosnia and Kosovo during the mid and late 1990s. Immediately following the terror attacks on September 11th, 2001, the 297th Military Intelligence Battalion deployed its Deployable Intelligence Support Element (DISE), to Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and again for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) (2003). The Battalion later earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation and Campaign Streamer for Southwest Asia 2004-05, for its deployment in support of XVIII Airborne Corps. The Battalion earned the Army Superior Unit Award, 2008-2009, for its outstanding service in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.
The 297th Military Intelligence Battalion continues to provide support to U.S. and Coalition Forces throughout The Central Command Area Of Responsibility, with forces deployed to Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan; at the same time, providing intelligence reach back support to Army Central Command and forces deployed on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan from the Theater Ground Intelligence Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
