Purpose:

Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (EMSO) provide the resource necessary for the implementation of the wireless portion of net-centric warfare. Understanding the operational process in planning, managing, and employing this resource is critical to the conduct of all warfighting functions. This course provides an introduction to EMSO, its importance during military operations, and the electromagnetic spectrum operations management process.
 

Course Scope:

The electromagnetic spectrum management course provides students with a foundation based in theory and doctrine to facilitate the training required to perform spectrum management operations at the Brigade Combat Team (BCT) level and below. The following subject areas are covered during the course: introduction to communication electronics principles, radio wave propagation theory, communication systems engineering, electromagnetic compatibility, Army-unique automated radio frequency engineering and assignment programs, International and US regulations, coordination channels and frequency request formats, electromagnetic warfare cell operations, and BCT organization as it relates to spectrum management. Students also receive hands-on training on the Automated Communications Engineering Software (ACES)/Joint Automated Communications Software (JACS), SPECTRUM XXI, and the System Planning Engineering and Engineering Device (SPEED).

Prerequisites:

Active Army, National Guard and Reserve Component SGT - MSG with less than 12 years in service who are assigned to, or are expected to be assigned to, a position requiring classification as MOS 25E30. They must have minimum scores of 105 in aptitude area GT and 105 in aptitude area EL. All personnel that are planning on attending this course must have a minimum clearance of Secret. Active Army and Reserve Component Signal officers, 1 LT or above, who are assigned to, or are expected to be assigned to, a position requiring classification as SI 5D. Active Army or Reserve Component Warrant Officers who are or will be assigned to a Spectrum Management position. DA CP 34 civilians who are currently working in or have accepted a Spectrum Management or NEC position. Civilians not currently working in a Spectrum Management or NEC position must provide a current SF50 showing they have accepted a position prior to the class start date.

Special Information:

  • National Guard Service members in the rank of SGT, SFC, or MSG need to obtain a grade waiver prior to attending the course.
  • Reserve Component Service members in the rank of SGT, SFC or MSG need to obtain a grade waiver prior to attending the course.
  • Active Duty SGT's must have DLC 2 complete prior to attending the course but do not need to be ALC complete, this course will count for ALC in accordance with the SMAPP memo.

CAPSTONE:

A three day capstone training event is conducted at the end of the course to assess student learning and to evaluate their ability to perform required MOS specific critical tasks in a simulated field environment.
